The best roofing or foundation repair contractor to have is the one you don’t need! I’m a nice guy, but here are some tips to keep ME away!

For a healthy foundation:

  1. Don’t plant trees too close to your house! Crepe Myrtles are a major culprit, but any shallow-rooted tree or shrub can be problematic. Their roots will automatically find their way to the nice cool damp soil under your slab or in the crawl space of your house.
  2. Fill in holes around your foundation and make sure water drains away from your home.
  3. Consider gutters as a great way to control the volume and direction water takes as it comes off of your house. Test the location of downspouts to prevent a gush of water toward your foundation.
  4. If you live in a home with pier and beam foundation (much of what was built before 1960) make sure that the crawlspace under your house is dry. Dampness or standing water is a recipe for disaster and indicates that you may have drainage or plumbing issues.
  5. Remember: the two greatest causes of foundation damage are hyper saturation and hypo saturation – too much water or no water.

Roofing 101:

  1. The most common type of composite shingle is the 3-tab variety. Standard 3-tab shingles have an average 25-year life and withstand wind up to 60 mph.
  2. Premium 3-tab composite shingles are rated for 30 years and 70-110 mph wind. I recommend these for areas where there are no windbreaks such as rural homes or homes in newly constructed neighborhoods with no mature trees.
  3. Metal is a great material, but many find the cost to be prohibitive at almost double the price of composite shingles.
  4. Insurance companies don’t pay for appearance! If your metal roof is battered by hail and has visible dents, this may not be enough to result in an approved claim. It’s best to know your insurance company’s track record on this sort of thing.
  5. Estimates should be free!
  6. Use a local company! Out of towners show up in droves following a hail storm. The problem is that they leave just as quickly and are sometimes hard to find if there’s a problem.
  7. When you suspect your roof was damaged in a storm, call immediately for an adjustor to take a look. Your claim is much more apt to be denied the longer you wait.
